| Avaz Now Offers Transcription for The Age of Streaming Media |
| |
Atlanta, May 15 - Avaz® is pleased to announce its new transcription service designed for the rapidly growing streaming media market.
Streaming Media: Growing Fast
Streaming media technology enables the real time or on demand distribution of audio, video and multimedia on the Internet. Software, such as Microsoft's Media Player, Real Networks's RealPlayer or Apple's QuickTime, allow for the simultaneous transfer of digital media (video, voice and data) so that it is received as a continuous real-time stream by the audience. In short, the PC becomes an on-demand media player.
As band-width continues to grow, so does this market and the variety of content available. The number of video streams increased 80.7 percent in 2004, for a total of 14.2 billion streams, according to AccuStream iMedia Research (1). Robust growth is projected to continue in 2005, with a total of 21 billion streams (up 48 percent year over year) forecast for 2005. By 2007, the annual volume of video streams is projected to exceed 35 billion.
Challenges For Media Creators
The proliferation of streaming content, however, provides a challenge to its creators: the content of video and audio can not be indexed by search engines such as Yahoo or Google. Their databases require text in order to catalog information so web users can easily locate the documents they are looking for. Streaming media contains no text.
For example: a scientific meeting releasing a one hour web-video of its latest research may have its findings totally ignored by the search engines, who can not 'read' video or audio.
Avaz created a solution that not only solves this challenge, but adds valuable features that allows visitors of a streaming media site to quickly locate desired information.
Solution: Avaz Streaming Media Transcription Services
Avaz Group, an international leader in digital transcription services, announced its new service available to streaming media authors and publishers. Using its proprietary digital platform, Avaz turns spoken words (and any cues a client requests) into a XML transcript. The transcript can be easily published via HTML and is therefore available to not only the visitors of a site, but also to the index engines of Yahoo, Google and others.
How It Works |
- The creator / publisher provides Avaz with a digital copy of the video or audio. In our example, it is a 30 minute video on building a roof for a garden shed.
Avaz creates a transcript of the video file, including any cues desired by the publisher. In this instance, step by step headlines of the process (Step 5.1, the Rafters).
- While the transcript is generated, we create a 'link' from each word or phrase to the corresponding content within the video.
- The final transcript contains the text, ready to be published online, as well as hidden XML tags that work with a variety of streaming media caption formats, such as Microsoft's SAMI format.
- Once published on a web-site, the web-visitor can easily read (and print) the text, in this case the instructions to building the roof. He or she may also click on any word or phrase within the text [see Image 1]. After the click, the video will open and start playing the corresponding content [see Image 2]. No need to search or play back the whole video.
- In addition, the text within the HTML page -- the content of the video -- can now be indexed by the search engines. An Internet surfer on Yahoo searching for, say, 'assembling rafters on garden shed' can now find the publisher's video on the returned listings.

The Result
Web publishers are now free to utilize the communication strength of video and audio without having to worry about being ignored by the search engines.
In addition, visitors can quickly locate desired content.
"This is a win-win situation for both publishers and web-users," says Michael R. Kauka, CEO of Avaz Group. "We feel this will have a significant positive impact on the future of streaming media. And I am proud of the fact that our technology allows us to offer this service very inexpensively."
